Welcome to this course, The World Beneath Your Feet! In this first introduction module, we want to share a bit about this course, about us and what we hope you’ll get out of this course.
The world beneath all our feet is gaining evermore attention. With reports of a limited number of harvests left, regular media coverage of temperature extremes and crop losses, soaring food prices and increasing chronic disease burden worldwide, we are frequently reminded that change needs to happen, and without delay. But what does soil have to do with all this? And how can our actions, both individually and collectively have an impact?
This course is an introduction to the amazing potential of healthy soils, and how we individually and collectively can support this. We’ll explore how and why soil is a key player in food production, human health and climate change. We’ll look at some important disruptors of healthy soils and how we can instead encourage soil health. And we’ll touch on ways of putting it to action, in the garden, as consumers and as citizens.
